Justine Kang, and what of your prodigal son?

and what of your prodigal son?, 2022
Mahogany, lyre tuning pins, guqin strings, lyre strings

The design of this instrument was inspired by the kafir harp and the guqin, which is considered an instrument of subtlety for its quietness and association with literati. Two sets of strings share one soundbox, each set vibrating in response to the other being plucked, a secret traveling within itself. Laid in the title is a reflection on privilege: of the scholar-gentlemen from whom I have stolen exclusivity; and of my very own, to be here, to make this, to have my inexperience evident in every scratch.
